Formula
Age = completed years, then completed months from that point, then remaining days

- full months since the most recent anniversary

- days since the last completed month boundary
Total days are counted directly between the two dates, so they account for every leap day in between.
Worked example
Someone born on 15 August 2000, on 12 September 2026.
- Completed years2000 to 2026 gives 26 years on 15 August 2026
- Completed months15 August to 12 September is not a full month, so 0
- Remaining days15 August to 12 September is 28 days
The exact age is 26 years, 0 months and 28 days.
How exact age is worked out
Age is counted by completed years first, then completed months, then the leftover days. That is why the answer can be 24 years, 7 months and 3 days rather than a decimal number of years.
Because months differ in length, the day count is taken from the anniversary date rather than by dividing. The calculator counts full months from the birth date and then measures the remaining days from that anchor, so results stay correct across month lengths and leap years.
Leap year birthdays
A person born on 29 February has a birth anniversary only in leap years. In other years the calculator treats 28 February as the anniversary date, which matches how most Indian records and age eligibility rules handle it.
Things to keep in mind
- Dates are handled in your own time zone and the date of birth cannot be in the future relative to the second date.
- Some official forms in India calculate age in completed years only, ignoring months and days.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my age for a government exam cut-off?
Set the second date to the cut-off date stated in the notification, usually 1 January or 1 July of the exam year, rather than today. The calculator will show your exact age on that date.
Why does the answer show months and days instead of a decimal?
Because months have different lengths, a decimal such as 26.08 years hides what people usually want to know. Completed years, months and days is how age is stated on forms and in everyday conversation.
